O RAL P ERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES 1. Repetition: words, sounds or images may be repeated to reinforce the main point(s). 2. Rule of Three: Saying something three times carries weight; three times is the sign of a powerful speaker. The Rule of Three allows the speaker to express concepts more completely, emphasize main points, and increase the memorization of the message. 3. Flattery: Praising the audience, to get them to agree with the speaker. 4. Rhetorical Questions: These questions don’t require an answer. Rather the answers are implied and the audience agrees with them (of course).

O RAL PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES 5. Emotive Language: Engaging the audience’s emotions by using words that carry emotional weight. Encourages the audience to respond on an emotional level rather than considering the facts. 6. Hyperbole: An exaggeration used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but not to be taken literally. They are used to create emphasis and effect. 7. Imperatives: Forms commands or requests, including the giving of prohibition or permission.
