Bell Work What role did religion play in the New England colonies? This Day in History: September 24, The Judiciary Act is passed by Congress and signed by George Washington which establishes the first Supreme Court. September 24, The Warren Commission is delivered to President Johnson.

The Great English Migration In the 1620s the economy of England suffered and many people lost their jobs. Taxes were raised. The Church of England began to punish dissenters. Between more than 40,000 Englishmen moved to the English colonies in the Americas.

Politics and Religion Government leaders were church members. Only male church members could vote. In order to be considered God’s elect people had to pass a public test, the Puritan faith was exclusive. Government leaders outlawed certain religious views. Dissenters were punished.

Anne Hutchinson Anne Hutchinson became outspoken against Puritan leaders in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She claimed people’s relationship with God did not need guidance from ministers. John Winthrop and other Puritan leaders forced her out of the colony. She would end up founding Portsmouth in Rhode Island.

Anne Hutchinson Antinomianism- From the Greek, “against the law.” Antinomian is of or relating to the view that Christians are released by grace from the obligation of observing the moral law.

Group Questions Summarize A Puritan Rebel. How did Anne Hutchinson’s teachings differ from those of the Puritan ministers? How did this debate affect life in the colony? What was the role of Puritan women and how did Anne Hutchinson disrupt the status quo? Explain how religious and civil freedoms were repressed in Puritan society specifically in the case of Anne Hutchinson. What influence do you think the Puritans and Anne Hutchinson had on the Founding Fathers if any? (Separation of church and state)
