Kauko The Finnish Internet school

Why Kauko? 1)Kauko offers assistance to schooling when a family temporarily moves abroad The parents' work periods often occur at a stage when the children's vocabulary and deeper understanding of their mother tongue is under rapid development. At this critical stage, it is very important for the children to keep in touch with the Finnish language under expert guidance.

Why Kauko? 2) Kauko offers Finnish as a second language to the Finnish cities or schools there are not so many immigrant pupils. It is written in the law that immigrant pupil should study both their own mother tongue and Finnish as a second language (F2). F2-groups are difficult to organize if there are only a few immigrant pupils. Via Kauko it is possible to ”collect” F2- pupils from different cities or schools.

Why Kauko? 3) offers possibility to study for children who are not able to go to a usual school If a pupil is too sick to stay at school all day or his home is very far from the school, it is possible to study via Kauko.

Kauko education has been given more than 10 years mostly in Finnish and Sweedish languages and mathematics. pupils has been taught for examble to Canada, Thailand, Hong Kong, Botswana, Italy, USA, Norway, England, Finland …

Kauko learning through video conferencing and the remote learning environment usually two lessons a week *one lesson real-time video conference * the other lesson exercises in internet based on learning environment

In the beginning some problems with technique – not so often nowadays. For pupil, who need special education even in Finland, this method is more challenging than a usual class-room education Problems?

Feedback Families are very happy to have this possibility It is easier to return back to Finland It is possible to start postgraduate studies in normal time even if the family has been abroad many years ” treatment” for homesickness for children

Kauko for a teacher nice to get to know about school systems in different countries and continents pupils don’t think that their mother tongue is a self-evidence -> they are eager to study very interesting and rewarding job
