Can you remember the 6 types of nouns that we’ll be covering in our noun unit? Or, even more impressive, can you remember which ones we have covered so far?

1. Common Nouns – covered on Monday, 9/22 2. Proper Nouns – covered on Monday, 9/22 3. Collective Nouns – covered on Tuesday, 9/23 4. Compound Nouns – covered TODAY! Friday, 9/24 5. Countable Nouns 6. Non-Countable Nouns Next week we will address countable vs. non-countable nouns, but if you are having a hard time remembering the rules and definitions of common nouns, proper nouns, or collective nouns, be sure to visit our class website and refresh your memory with my other PowerPoints!

A compound noun is a noun made with two or more words. Typically, it is a noun made up of two other nouns – or a noun and an adjective – and it creates a new noun that is totally different from its two individual parts. There are 3 different forms of compound nouns…

There is a space between the two words that create a compound noun. Some examples of this form are: tennis shoe home plate pet shop

The second form of compound nouns is one that uses a hyphen between the two parts of the new noun. Okay, but when do we use the hyphen? You use a hyphen to separate the two nouns when you need to CLARIFY something between the two nouns. Okay, yes, that doesn’t help me. Examples, please?

water-bottle When the first word is a substance (water, ink, soda, etc.), the hyphen is used to show that the second word is not MADE of that substance, but is to HOLD that substance. Meaning: It’s a BOTTLE which HOLDS water, not a bottle that is MADE of water paper-clip Just like the water-bottle, we need to show that the clip HOLDS PAPER TOGETHER. It is not a clip MADE of paper.

What do we think the third type of compound noun is?

CLOSED compound nouns do not have a space or a hyphen to separate the two words. Examples: waterproof, dishcloth, pancake, keyboard, football, blackboard, haircut haircut pancake football keyboard

breakfast breakfast

tooth paste toothpaste

fish tank fish tank

wall paper wallpaper

grasshopper Grasshopper
