Mars Uncovered Goal: Guide students through an inquiry-based and critical thinking approach of studying the surface of Mars in a similar way scientists do. Objectives: Learn and practice relative age dating techniques Create a simple geologic feature map Analyze and interpret the geologic history of a region on Mars Take out the Student Guide from the Mars Uncovered section of your notebook.
Mars Uncovered Groups: 3 groups consisting of ~2 people at each table (Each table and 3 groups should all be working with the same image mosaic) Procedure: Complete Student Worksheets (Activity pages) (1 at a time) Discuss as a table Revise (change) answers as necessary

1. Observe image mosaic 2. Answer questions on Student Worksheet 1 3. Discuss Mars Uncovered: Initial Observations and Strategies

Mars Uncovered: Age Dating Techniques
1. Practice techniques using Worksheets 2 and 3 2. Discuss in groups 3. Using image handouts: a. Classify craters: label image to illustrate classification reasons b. Relatively age date features (#1 is the youngest) c. Post your images Circular rim Visible ejecta blanket Age Dating Techniques
1.Complete Students Worksheets 4 and 5 2.Write geologic history (on 5”x 7” colored post-it paper) and post along with your geologic map Mars Uncovered: Create Feature Map / Interpret Geologic History
1.Complete Student Worksheet 6 2.Post at least 1 question for each group at your table from the Future Investigations section Mars Uncovered: Evaluate Initial Strategies / Future Investigations
1.Have students read and compare the geologic history of their regions (show map and / or image mosaic). 2.Discuss interpretations 3.Discuss possible future investigations Mars Uncovered: Closure
