Be Healthy From the Start World Health Organization definition of health: Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Public health starts at home Examples health practices that begin in the home: maternal health, disaster preparedness, or basic nutrition.
Prenatal Care Definition of prenatal: Before birth; during or relating to pregnancy. “Prenatal care can help keep mothers and their babies healthy. Babies of mothers who do not get prenatal care are three times more likely to have a low birth weight and five times more likely to die than those born to mothers who do get care.” - Office of Women’s Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Methods of Prenatal Care Family planning Prenatal care begins before you start trying to get pregnant – preconceptive health Adequate nutrition Mothers should eat balanced meals, with nutrient dense foods, and take supplements. Examples of supplements recommended to mothers: Folic acid, calcium, iron, and vitamin D Remember variety, balance, and moderation Regular check ups many fetal abnormalities can be detected by doctors, regular check ups help doctors detect and properly treat problems.
Examples of Pregnancy Complications Pregnancy or birth complications that could be detected and treated by doctors include: Anemia Urinary Tract Infections Mental Health Conditions Hypertension Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
Application to the Health Belief Model 1. Perceived susceptibility - pregnancy complications Heighten their perceived susceptibility if it is too low 2. Perceived severity “It will not happen to me.” or “What difference does it make?” 3. Perceived benefits – safer pregnancy outcome and better maternal and fetal health 4. Perceived barriers – time or money constraints 5. Cues to action Ex: text4baby text message service 6. Self- Efficacy – education resources Ex: WIC
