The business and its environment Controlled assessment

Controlled assessment details There will be two controlled assessments made available to you-you will tackle Controlled Assessment (A) The controlled assessment will require you to construct an action plan and to carry out a reflective account of tasks undertaken The controlled assessment is 10 hours long and consists of nine tasks (two of which are an action plan and a reflective task – way you evaluate how well you think you have carried out the tasks)

Controlled assessment details The controlled assessment will take place over a four-week period beginning the week of 8 February 2010 and will take place in normal lesson time Essentially controlled assessment is coursework carried out in school under supervision

research Over the next few weeks you will carry out research into Tesco plc For the purpose of this assessment we will concentrate on Tesco Pembroke Dock – wherever possible the answers given in the controlled assessment should be related to Pembroke dock branch However you will see that some areas will be determined by the overall Tesco policy

research There are a number of different areas that you will research in preparation for your controlled assessment You are allowed to prepare a Word folder (name it GCSE Applied Business: Research for Unit 1 Controlled Assessment) which contains the research which you have carried out in preparation for the assessment You are allowed access to this during the controlled assessment

Research brief You need to research the following: Three aims of your chosen organisation, the level of success in meeting them and the role played by functional areas in the success The effect of economic conditions in business sector performance on the customer base. Developments in ICT in attracting and retaining customers A presentation on environmental issues and legislation

The aims of Tesco plc Firstly you need to concentrate on finding out about the aims of Tesco plc (Pembroke Dock branch) It should be quite obvious that the aims of Tesco at a local level are determined by the head office of Tesco You need to identify three aims of Tesco and collect evidence which shows how successful Tesco has been in meeting these aims You also need to collect evidence which shows the role played by the functional areas in this success e.g. How much of Tesco’s success is down to its marketing or its customer service ?

Economic conditions You need to look at the impact of the economic conditions on Tesco plc and its ability to meet its aims What effect have the economic conditions had on the supermarket market in general - business sector performance?

Developments in ICT How have developments in ICT helped Tesco attract and retain customers ?

Environmental issues How is Tesco affected by environmental issues and legislation?
