The Effect of Social Media Use on Narcissistic Behavior By Mariel Meskunas

Social Media & Narcissism Several studies show that social media use increases narcissism and negatively affects self- esteem. Researchers found that narcissism was the highest predictor of social media Those with higher levels of narcissism were more active on social media

Hypotheses NPI scores will increase with time spent on social media NPI scores will increase with amount of social media sites/applications NPI scores will decrease with age Men will have higher NPI scores than women

Method The survey consisted of 2 parts: How much time spent on the Internet How many social media sites they use How much time spent on social media. Age and gender __________________________________ Narcissism Personality Inventory (NPI)

Data Time spent on social media: – A one-way analysis of variance was performed. Social media sites/applications: – A Pearson’s bivariate correlation was performed between number of social media sites/applications used and NPI scores. Gender & Age: – An independent samples – t-test was performed.

Results Time spent on social media: There was a significant link between social media use and NPI score Number of social media sites/applications: No significant correlation between number of social media sites/applications and NPI score. Gender: There was no significant difference between male and female. Age: NPI scores decreased with age.
