WHEN YOU THINK TRANSPORT - THINK TECHNOLOGY

Importance E-commerce is one of the new technologies having a significant effect on the operation of transport. It completely changes the context for the transport industry. It can contribute to improving safety and security.

Importance The failure of the transport industry to take up e-commerce impacts on all other parties in the logistics chain, and has a consequential impact on national and regional economies.

APEC Initiatives E-commerce activities in APEC Coordination through E-commerce Steering Group Paperless Trading Initiative Commitment by Leaders Paperless Trading Individual Action Plans

TPT-WG Originated Paperless Trading Initiative. Human Capacity Building Projects. Research Projects Practical Implementation Projects.

TPT-WG Program to assist the implementation of e-commerce. Pilot e-commerce training. Electronic Port Manifest Project. Paperless Trading Demonstration Project. Electronic Port Discussion Group Pilot Project.

Roles for APEC Piloting and implementing e-commerce solutions? - only when Government is directly involved. Standard setting? - handled by UN fora. - encouraging regional take-up.

Roles for APEC Reducing requirements for paper documents. - APEC Paperless Trading Initiative Awareness raising and training for small firms. - Extensive APEC work program in collaboration with private sector to assist SMEs

Summary E-commerce in transport is important. APEC and the TPT-WG have made important contributions. We need to address the right issues, and should intensify efforts to achieve APEC’s goals.
