Network Virtualization

Network virtualization 1 In computing, 'network virtualization' is the process of combining hardware and software network resources and network functionality into a single, software-based administrative entity, a virtual network. Network virtualization involves platform virtualization, often combined with resource virtualization.

Network virtualization 1 Network virtualization is categorized as either external, combining many networks, or parts of networks, into a virtual unit, or internal, providing network-like functionality to the software containers on a single system. Whether virtualization is internal or external depends on the implementation provided by vendors that support the technology.

Network virtualization 1 In software testing, network virtualization is a pre-production process for recreating network conditions from the production environment within the test environment. A component of application performance engineering, network virtualization enables connections between applications, services, dependencies and end users to be accurately emulated in the test environment.

Network virtualization - Components of a virtual network 1 Various equipment and software vendors offer network virtualization by combining any of the following:

Network virtualization - Components of a virtual network 1 The following is a survey of common network virtualization scenarios and examples of vendor implementation of these scenarios.

Network virtualization - External network virtualization 1 Some vendors offer 'external network virtualization', in which one or more local networks are combined or subdivided into virtual networks, with the goal of improving the efficiency of a large corporate network or data center

Network virtualization - Internal network virtualization 1 Other vendors offer 'internal network virtualization'

Network virtualization - Examples of internal network virtualization 1 OpenSolaris network virtualization features (see OpenSolaris Network Virtualization and Resource Control) enable the network in the box scenario

Network virtualization - Combined internal and external network virtualization 1 VMware provides products that offer both internal and external network virtualization only

Network virtualization - Network virtualization for developers and QA testers 1 In the pre-production stages of the software development life cycle, network virtualization is the process of recreating network conditions from the production - or real world - environment within the test environment

Network virtualization - Network virtualization for developers and QA testers 1 A component of Application performance engineering, network virtualization enables connections between applications, services, dependencies and end users to be accurately emulated in the test environment

Network virtualization - Network virtualization for developers and QA testers 1 With the massive global uptake in mobile devices and the rise of cloud computing, the effect of the network has become even more pronounced since conditions across the “last mile” affect performance more than other factors, and mobile conditions in particular are intrinsically dynamic. Therefore, incorporating network virtualization is particularly crucial when any mobile or cloud component is part of the scenario.

OpenSolaris Network Virtualization and Resource Control 1 'OpenSolaris network virtualization and resource control' is a set of OpenSolaris features, currently under development by Oracle_Corporation|Oracle as an open source project. OpenSolaris provides an internal network virtualization and quality of service scenario, implemented through the features of the OpenSolaris Crossbow umbrella project. nity/crossbow

OpenSolaris Network Virtualization and Resource Control - Description 1 The Crossbow project software, combined with next generation network interfaces like xge and bge, enable network virtualization and resource control for a single system. By combining VNICs with features such as [ ow/faq/#ip_instances exclusive IP zones] or the Sun xVM hypervisor, system administrators can run applications on separate virtual machines to improve performance and provide security.

OpenSolaris Network Virtualization and Resource Control - Features of the Crossbow project 1 This section briefly describes the main features of the Crossbow network virtualization and resource control project. For further details on each feature, see the Crossbow Network Virtualization Architecture document available for download at the [ sbow/Docs OpenSolaris Crossbow documentation page].
