SOURCES ON THE ROMANS Documentary Evidence – Roman writers who wrote in Latin Aretfacts – coins, swords, household utensils. Buildings – temples, amphitheatres and aqueducts, the ruins in Rome and other cities. The ruins of Pompeii which was covered by ash and lava from Mt. Vesuvius.

How Rome became Rome Romulas & Remus Twin brothers Conceived by the god of War, Mars and his wife Rhea. Reared by a she wolf and woodpecker after being found floating on the River Tiber. A shepherd and his wife then reared them into adulthood Romulas wanted to found city on the Palatine Hill Remus wanted to found city on the Aventine Hill Both fought each other and Romulas defeated and killed Remus

The beginning of the Roman Empire

THE STORY OF ROME Began in the 8th century – villages grew along the banks of the River Tiber. Villages eventually joined together to form the city of Rome in 753BC. Rome had conquered all of Italy by 250BC. Eventually the Roman Empire stretched from Britain all the way across to Turkey. The Empire also controlled all the lands of North Africa.

The Romans were one of the most powerful, clever and successful ancient civilizations ever. They ruled over nearly all of Europe and most of north Africa, including Egypt. If you counted all the modern countries that would have been in the Roman Empire, then you would be counting 48 different countries ruled by the Romans. Your task is to draw and colour accurately a map of the Roman Empire on a blank map of Europe. Put a map key in the corner. Extension 1 – using an atlas of Europe, identify and name on your Roman Empire map as many countries as you can that were under the rule of the Romans.
