Preliminaries  Read the handout “America the Beautiful”.  Answer the following in one sentence (max.):  At what types of events have you heard this anthem?  What themes run through these three stanzas of “America the Beautiful”?

Objectives:  The students will be able to analyze anthems and political speeches as agents of patriotism, unity and potential rebellion.  The students will be able to identify poetic devices used in two anthems.
