Benchmark Review List 1. List the steps of the scientific method. 2. Describe the three types of graphs discussed in class and the method that they present material. 3. We discussed 7 different base units for the SI system. What were they and what were their units? 4. You made a foldable to study the six main SI prefixes. What were they and what were their values? 5. Describe the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma (the most common/abundant)

Benchmark Review List- Cont. 6. Homogeneous Vs. Heterogeneous- Describe 7. Chemical Vs. Physical Property- Describe 8. Chemical Vs. Physical Change- Describe 9. Describe ionization. 10. Describe three factors that affect the rates of dissolving in a solution.

Benchmark Review List- Cont. 11. Explain the three different levels of concentration of solutions. 12. Mixture Vs. Solution- Describe 13. How does temperature affect the pressure of a gas? 14. Explain how particles behave in a substance when they are heated and/or cooled. 15. Describe the arrangement of the subatomic particles of an atom.

Benchmark Review List- Cont. 16. Define the terms: compound, element, polar, non-polar, ion, alloy, solubility

Benchmark Review List 1. List the steps of the scientific method. State the problem, Gather information, Form hypothesis, Test hypothesis, Analyze data, Draw conclusion 2. Describe the three types of graphs discussed in class and the method that they present material. Line- shows a relationship where the dependent variable changes due to a change in the independent variable Bar- compares information collected by counting Circle- shows how a whole is broken into parts Diagrams are found in chapter 1

Benchmark Review List 3. We discussed 7 different base units for the SI system. What were they and what were their units? Quantity measured Base unitsymbol Lengthmeterm Massgramg Timeseconds Electric currentampereA TemperatureKelvink Amount of a substance molemol Intensity of lightcandelacd

Benchmark Review List 4. You made a foldable to study the six main SI prefixes. What were they and what were their values? Prefixsymbolmultiplying factor kilo-k1000 deci-d0.1 centi-c0.01 milli-m0.001 micro-µ nano-n

Benchmark Review List 6. Describe the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma (the most common/abundant) Solid- definite shape and volume, particles are in a set pattern. Liquid- definite volume not a definite shape, particles are free to move around the container. Gas- not a definite shape or volume, particles are free to move around and spread out taking the shape of any container they come in contact with. Plasma- positively and negatively charged particles, most abundant state of matter in the universe.

Benchmark Review List 5. Homogeneous Vs. Heterogeneous- Describe homogenous mixture- contains two or more gaseous, liquid, or solid substances (Looks the same throughout) heterogenous mixture- mixture of different and easily distinguishable materials (You can see the different parts.) 6. Chemical Vs. Physical Property- Describe chemical property- characteristic of a substance indicting that it can change chemically physical property- characteristic of a material which can be observed without changing the identity of the substance in the material 7. Chemical Vs. Physical Change- Describe chemical change- one substance changes into another substance physical change- change of one substance’s size, shape, or state of matter

Benchmark Review List 8. Describe ionization. The process in which electrolytes dissolve in water and separate into charged particles. 9. Describe three factors that affect the rates of dissolving in a solution. temperature- higher temperature speeds up particle movement, causing more particles to bump into the solute crystal size- smaller pieces increase surface area, resulting in more solvent coming into contact with more solute stirring- brings more solvent into contact with more solute

Benchmark Review List 10. Explain the three different levels of concentration of solutions. unsaturated solution- able to dissolve more solute at a given temperature saturated solution- contains all the solute it can hold at a given temperature supersaturated solution- contains more solute than a saturated one at the same temperature 11. Mixture Vs. Solution- Describe mixture- two or more substances that can be easily separated solution- same thing as a homogeneous mixture; contains two or more gaseous, liquid or solid substances blended evenly

Benchmark Review List 12. How does temperature affect the pressure of a gas? At a constant pressure, volume increases as temperature increases. At a constant pressure, volume decreases as temperature decreases. 13. Explain how particles behave in a substance when they are heated and/or cooled. The lower the temperature- the slower the particles move. The higher the temperature- the faster the particles move.

Benchmark Review List 14. Describe the arrangement of the subatomic particles of an atom. There are three subatomic particles- protons have a positive charge and are found in the nucleus, neutrons have a neutral charge and are found in the nucleus, electrons have a negative charge and are found outside the nucleus in the electron cloud. 15. Explain the arrangement of the elements on the periodic table. Elements are organized in the periodic table by increasing atomic number.

Benchmark Review List 16. Define the terms: compound, element, polar, non-polar, ion, alloy, solubility, dependent and independent variable, theory, and law
