 Born in 1541on an island of Crete.  Changed his name from Domenikos Theotocopoulos to El Greco because of his birth in Crete.  Great time period for an artist to be born.

 Traveled around Italy, Spain and Rome to become a better artist.  First trained in the Byzantina School of Icon Painting.  Mannerist painting in Italy.  In Venice, he picked up on dramatic color techniques. “View of Toledo”

 He is widely known for his expressionistic style.  Shows realism and mysticism of the Mannerist era.  Mural for the church of Santa Tome. “The Burial of Count Orgaz” (1586)

“The Assumption of the Virgin” (1577)  Unnaturally elongated figures.  Very strong contrasts of color and light.  Gave off a mythmaking feel about his art and his life.

 Suffered from poverty and left great debts behind him.  Death: April 7 th, 1614 in Toledo, Spain.  El Greco’s bold and almost abstract use of paint still continues to strongly appeal to contemporary tastes today.
