Science Fair Project

The Big Question Which liquid out of vinegar, Coke, ands Orange Juice; does the most Damage to your teeth? I chose this question to ask myself to help others and myself, know which liquid damages your teeth the most. I could help people who drink way too much soda, people who are way too in love with orange juice, and people who adore vinegary foods. I could help people make sure they’re taking care of their teeth.

Hypothesis My hypothesis is, that Coke is going to damage your teeth the worst out of orange juice and vinegar. I thought of this hypothesis because I’ve learned from my mom and others, that Coke is one of the top three worst foods/drinks for people. It has way too much sugar and caffeine.

Interesting Facts From My Research 1. I think Coke is the liquid that will damage your teeth the worst because Coke has a very large amount of sugar in it. Also, it is highly acidic and it decreases your calcium level throughout your whole entire body. In conclusion, if you drink Coke often then it will weaken your teeth and make them ware down and rot. Besides, your teeth are mainly made out of calcium. Also one 12 oz. can of soda has nine and a half teaspoons of sugar!

Facts Contd. 2. Another one of the facts from my research is that eggs are very similar to teeth because each of them has enamel and calcium carbonate and protein. The calcium carbonate is what makes each of the objects hard.

Facts Contd. 3. Some more research I found is that the egg that sat in the vinegar got very squishy and thin because an egg shell contains something called "calcium carbonate" which makes the shell hard and the vinegar is an acid known as acetic acid. When calcium carbonate and acetic acid combine, it causes a chemical reaction. During the chemical reaction carbon dioxide is released. The chemical reaction proceeds until all of the carbon in the shell is used up. When you take the egg out of the vinegar it's soft because all of the carbon floated out of the egg in little bubbles.

Items You Need You need: Coke Orange Juice White Distilled Vinegar 3 Eggs 1 Camera 3 Clear containers that can hold at least 3 cups of liquid, with lids

Procedure Step #1 – In one of the containers, pour three cups of orange juice into it. Step #2 – In the second container, pour three cups of vinegar into it. Step #3 – In the last container, pour three cups of Coke into it. Step #4 – Gently place one egg in each of the containers. (Make sure each egg is completely covered with the assigned liquid) Step #5 – Place all the lids very tightly on the containers. Step #6 – Label each of the containers with the date you start the experiment and the type of liquid that is in it. Step #7 – Place each container in the refrigerator. Step #8 – Keep each container in the refrigerator for fifteen days. Step #9 – Make sure to check each egg every three days and the first day you start the experiment. Check its size, shape, and color. After each check up, take a picture of each egg and jot down a few notes for each egg. (check on day 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15) Step #10 – After fifteen days take each egg out of the containers once at a time so that you won’t get the eggs mixed up. As you’re analyzing each egg once at a time look at their color, size, shape, and even inside of them.

Observations Day #1 – When I put the egg in the Coke and Vinegar the eggs started to fizz. (around the shell) Especially the Coke. Day #3 – Orange Juice: Around the whole shell, it was slimy. Also, the very first layer of the egg shell was started to where off. You can even scrape it off with your finger. Vinegar: It looked like it got a little bigger. It also got pretty squishy with only the cell membrane holding it together. It also looked kind of yellow. Coke: The egg looked like it shrunk a little bit. The whole egg shell was discolored (light brown)

Observations Contd. Day #6 – Orange Juice: The egg shell started to get squishy (not as much as the vinegar egg) and had splotches of yellow. It was also still slimy. Vinegar: It now looked a little see through, you could barely see the yolk inside. Coke: The whole egg shell was light brown and had a little bit of dark brown splotches. However, it still looked a little smaller than an average egg and the shell was still pretty hard. Day #9 – Orange Juice: The egg shell began to get squishier and the outer layer of the shell was almost completely wore down Vinegar: Still really squishy and see through and it feels kind of rubbery and very fragile. Coke: The egg shell had even more dark brown splotches and still a light brown.

Observations Contd. Day #12 – Orange Juice: The egg looked a little deformed, it was squishier, and it looked yellowish. Also, the egg was pretty fragile and it started to expand larger. Vinegar: The egg shell was still very squishy and it was almost completely see through. Coke: The egg shell was still light brown with more dark dark splotches. The dark spots felt raised. Day #15 – Orange Juice: The shell was squishy, a little bit see through, and discolored. (yellowish) Vinegar:The egg was a lot bigger than and average egg, the egg shell was practically completely see through, and the only part of the shell left was the bottom thin clear one. It’s also very fragile! Coke:The whole shell is light brown with many dark dark brown splotches that are raised. Also the egg looks smaller than an average egg.

Conclusion The conclusion of my science experiment is that coke is most likely to damage your teeth the worst out of orange juice, vinegar, and Coke. I figured it would be Coke because the egg got very discolored, fragile, gross, and kind of bumpy. Think of your teeth becoming like that! Also, You can actually get addicted to Coke because of the caffeine in it so you would drink it pretty often. Orange juice wouldn’t be the case because you can’t become addicted to it and most people only drink it once a day in the morning. Lastly, you would think that vinegar would be the worst but you’re wrong. Most people don’t necessarily drink vinegar. However, some people always crave vinegary foods such as types of dressing or chips. But, people don’t eat (or drink) that stuff enough for your teeth to get squishy. However, I would not change anything in my experiment. A question I have is, what would sprite do to the egg? In conclusion, coke is the big winner!!!!!!!!
