Mental Health Consultation Building capacity to meet the social emotional needs of children and families Presenters: Katie Schlipmann, Margo Camacho, Charice Daniels and Kevin O’Brien

The “3 R’s” of MHC – Relationship, Relationship, Relationship Relationships require effort Relationships require time to develop Relationships require clear, and sometimes flexible, expectations (“roles”) Professional relationships involve working together as a team towards shared goals

What is Mental Health? Mental health mental illness Mental health “F.A.C.E.S.” – Flexible, Adaptive, Coherent, Energized, Stable Our overall well-being is made up of three parts – health, illness, and injury.

What is Mental Health Consultation? Mental Health Consultation Psychotherapy for your clients Psychotherapy for staff Only for “the really bad cases”

What is mental health consultation? A collaborative relationship between a mental health professional and another professional (teacher, administrator, case worker) 1) A problem-solving process to strengthen relationships and to address your social emotional concerns with children and families 2) A capacity-building process to increase a staff and program’s ability to address mental health issues 3) A process to facilitate children and families’ engagement with needed services – within your program or with other programs in the community

Components of MHC Infant/Child/Family Focused MHC Provider Focused MHC Program Focused MHC System & Community Focused MHC From SAMSHA Expert Convening on IECMHC, 2014

What are the benefits of MHC for me as a Home Visitor? Better understanding of mental health issues Increase in ability to recognize MH issues More effective strategies for working with clients coping with mental health problems Increased knowledge of MH community resources Decreased compassion fatigue and work- related stress

What are the benefits of MHC for my families? Better engagement with program Increased willingness to seek MH help Increased ability to meet personal goals Increased ability of parent to meet the social emotional needs of children Decreased family stress

Mental Health Consultation is a Multi-Level Service

When can I call for a mental health consultation?? Concern about the well being or development of a child, parent or other family member Difficulty helping a client achieve goals Concern about parenting relationship Difficulty engaging with client Need to connect client with MH resources

Other issues for consultation Evaluate safety Assess trauma Concerns about family interactions Concerns about other relationships Debriefing difficult or traumatic situations

How do I introduce the idea to my families? Listen carefully for parent’s talking about their worries, concerns or problems Let them know this may be something the program can help them with Let them know that you need some help in order to know how best to help them Ask for permission; ask if they are ready Talk with your supervisor or the consultant
