How the Famine came to Ireland? The Blight struck not only Ireland but also the Scottish Western Highlands and Islands as well as most of Western Europe in the mid-1840s.The Blight came from North America. People say it came from wind others say it came from a disease on a boat.

The Blight In September 1845 a strange disease struck the potatoes as they grew in fields across Ireland. Many of the potatoes were found to have gone black and rotten and their leaves had withered. In the harvest of 1845, between one-third of the potato crop was destroyed by the strange disease, which became known as 'potato blight'.

Eviction Landlords were common in Ireland and for many landlord's the main interest was income rather than the conditions of their tenants. Many landlords realized that they could get a higher income by turning their properties to pasture than to continue with the old practice of collecting rents from tenant farmers. Evictions was the most common way of getting rid of unwanted tenants.
