It is a little late to take a new course for the LC Muon Detailed Baseline Design. Critical Path Items Build and test strips using robust techniques. We need enough tests to validate the technology. We need US and International HEP laboratories to back an LC. APD’s 1.2 mm  660 pix 40  2 H.E. Design for Mass Production Can the scintillator construction be separated from the SiAPD detector assembly and then joined ? Clearly depends on the dimensional tolerance and design of the pieces: scintillator bars and detectors/electronics. Tooling would probably be needed. This sort of reasoning is a disaster to spring on a group of physicists who have been sitting around for three days listening to detailed baseline design issues and two (almost but not quite) discoveries of the Higgs.

Optical/Mechanical Coupling of WLS/APDs B w w Strip #1 WLS Fiber glued with Epon APD #2 APD #3 w Strip #3 1.Strip-scintillator bars located with tooling. 2.Pixelated photon detectors located with tooling matched to 1. 3.WLS polished end located with tooling matched to B. Fiber dia. 1.2mm. PPD pixels inscribed in 1.2mm dia circle. Bar B has to be used to locate PPDs about ~1mil from polished end of WLS fiber.

Preparations for Making 16 Strips Presently measuring 14 strips 142” long on the global quality control granite bed digitizer. Need 32 PPDs to outfit these strips and WLS fiber. Have enough TB4 boards, scintillator bars? Plan to make a long test stand and modify existing testing apparatus. Need to understand mechanical width data.

Test Bench for Cosmic Testing

Para & Rubinov Studies Understanding available SiPMs To enable us to better understand how SiPMs work and what choices are available from various manufacturers we chose to compare approximately equivalent SiPMs from four commercial vendors. In each case we selected an approximately 1 mm 2 device with a “medium” pixel size. We used devices from Advansid (round 1.2mm diameter, 660 pixels) “A” HPK (square 1mm x 1mm, 400 pixels) “B” CPTA (round 1.3mm diameter, 796 pixels) “C” SensL (square 1mm x 1mm, 400 pixels) “D” We used identical setup to measure all devices

Strip-scintillator/Si APD Muon System Timeline for R&D - New design of mechanical /optical coupling scheme using tooling. Jan 31, Try with short strips. Feb Refine drawings of coupling scheme with specifications. March Start work on new test stand. Manpower needed. - Set-up tests with 4 planes of 4 strips readout at both ends. Results expected for inclusion in DBD - First results from cosmic ray tests of new coupling scheme. - Write a paper with sufficient data. - … Issues/concerns for DBD and beyond - No money; Need a few km of WLS fiber at a cost of $2 or $3 per foot. - People are scarce; Universities are not very active. - Funds are needed and does anyone think we will get them? - Need Lab directors and DOE HQ to help us. Universities too. Sign-up here.
