College Soccer Coach

About Me I am an 8 th grade student here at Monroe Middle School. I play on a soccer team, a baseball team, and a basketball team. I enjoy doing community service where I used to play baseball. It is a program called “Challenger Baseball”. It was created so that kids with physical and mental disabilities could play baseball. I like to play sports and spend time with my friends in my spare time.

Soccer is played in more countries than any other sport in the world

College Soccer Coach

Why I chose College Soccer Coach  I want to help players have a good experience with soccer  I want to teach life skills through soccer

My personal connection I have been surrounded by good college soccer coaches my entire life. From them I learned how to be a good player and what a good coach looks like.

Researching Education For Coaching  A college degree is not required to coach  A high school degree is required  Required licenses will be discussed later

Researching What a Coach Does A coach:  Plans practices  Teaches players tactical plans  Runs tactical drills  Oversees eligibility paperwork  Coaches players during the game

Researching Coaching Licenses  There are 6 levels of coaching licenses (F through A)  Division 1 coaching requires an A level license  Division 3 coaching requires a B level license

Researching Coaching Approach A coach:  Develops a philosophy of coaching  Understands players’ strengths and weaknesses  Trains to fill the gaps

Researching Coaching Recruiting  “90% of coaching college soccer is recruiting” Gregg Murphy Associate Women’s Head Coach, Santa Clara University  Recruiting is driven by coaching philosophy and the team’s needs

Research Reflection  College Coaches are constantly coaching their players on and off the field  In fact coaches have private meetings with each player once every week  Coaches talk to their players about more than soccer. They discuss school, social life and other issues raised by the player

Activity: How to get an F license  Check CYSA website (  F license facts: Beginner level license Only requirement is age 14 or older

Activity: Take an F license course  F license course has 2 parts  Classroom focus: how to motivate players  Field focus: Return demonstration of practice drills

Activity: Practice drills for skills and physical fitness  Learned how to assess players’ ball skills and conditioning  Practiced drills to improve ball skills  Practiced drills to improve conditioning

Activity: Practice how to coach for Mental Strength  Learned how to assess player individual knowledge and team chemistry  Set team goals  Developed drills to support team goals

Activity: Identifying Recruiting Opportunities  Learned how to assess team needs  Learned about showcase tournaments (Dallas, Orlando, and State Cups)

Reflection  I enjoyed learning about college soccer coaching  I liked seeing a different perspective of the game  I would definitely still pursue this career

Next Steps  I plan to graduate from high school  After high school I plan to go to College
