The Universe

Essential Question How do scientists think our universe was created, and what is the evidence that supports it?

The Universe Defined as everything that physically exists All of space and time All forms of matter and energy

The Big Bang Theory All galaxies started from one huge mass of densely packed matter The densely packed matter exploded with a “big bang” sending out matter and energy in all directions Over time the matter grouped together to form the stars and galaxies that now exist

Light waves Light travels in waves, each color has a specific wavelength

The Red Shift Evidence that the universe is expanding (supports Big Bang Theory) Distant galaxies give off a red light The red end of the spectrum has the longest wavelengths

The Red Shift If a galaxy is moving far away, the wavelengths become longer (or stretched out) All galaxies beyond our own show a red shift, so it is believed that the universe is expanding

Blue Shift If an object is moving closer to Earth, then the wavelengths get shorter which to the human eye appears blue This proves that galaxies and stars are moving towards us as well

Red Shift and Blue Shift
