 Twitter is a online social networking and microblogging service that allows users to send and receive messages via “tweet”.  Twitter was created in 2006 by Jack Dorsey when he wanted to make an SMS based social network.  Before coming up with the name “Twitter” names like FriendStalker & DodgeBall were considered.  According to the dictionary’s definition, Twitter is “a short burst of inconsequential information."  As of this year, Twitter reportedly has more than 500 million users.

 340 million Tweets are sent out daily. (That’s over 2 billion tweets per week!)  Twitter is one of the top ten most visited websites on the Internet.

 Tweets are 140 character messages that are sent out and can be read publicly if the user does not restrict them.  Users can subscribe to other users via “following” them.  According to Wikipedia, 40% of all tweets are just pointless babble.
