11 TH AND 12 TH GRADE HEALTH AND FITNESSHYDRATION/DEHYDRATION

After taking the PACER last week, why is it important to remain hydrated? How do you know when you’re dehydrated? Why do our bodies need fluids to function? Enduring Understandings & Essential Questions (List Relevant EUs & EQs)

Identify what dehydration is and the signs to look for Explain the importance of being hydrated Distinguish the difference between over hydration SWBAT…

Every student will have 1 sheet of paper You will SNAKE with different people and they will help you fill out the squares This is based off of prior knowledge 30 seconds per Snake! Hydration/Dehydration Activity

When normal conditions exist in the body, various mechanisms preserve fluid and electrolyte balance. If or when the mechanisms fail due to illness, stress, exercise, climate variations, supplements, foods, or beverages, life threatening imbalances occur. 45%- 50% of BW is water- Females 50%-60% of BW is water- Males (due to more lean body mass) Dehydration

I.E- A person workouts for a long period of time and doesn’t drink any water An adult drinks too much alcohol…. why does this cause dehydration? If the output of fluids exceeds the intake of fluids, an imbalance occurs, and dehydration develops.

In the clinical setting, dehydration can be detected by loss of skin elasticity or turgor. If a fold of pinched skin returns to its original shape, especially slowly, then dehydration is suspected. Dehydration/Turgor

Body water moves from areas of high concentration to low concentration; to maintain equilibrium in all body compartments. Sensible body water loss occurs daily in Stool (200mL) Urine ( mL) Sweat Insensible losses occur in the skin (these vary w/ humidity, temperature, & respiratory rate) Why is Dehydration so important?

Hyponatremia- Electrolyte disorder when there is an imbalance of water and sodium in your blood Associated with neurological morbidity and mortality (DEADLY) Most instances of hyponatremia has occurred because of over drinking water Overhydration

On your Post it write the following: 1.Name 2.2 things that stuck with you 3.2 things that you need to stick better What STUCK with you today? What STUCK with you today?
