Presentation transcript:

 “Art is a lie that brings us nearer to the truth” (Pablo Picasso). Evaluate this claim in relation to a specific art form (for example, visual arts, literature, theatre).

 If I told you it was drawn by Adolph Hitler, does it change your opinion? Why or Why Not?

Fountain is a 1917 work widely attributed to Marcel Duchamp. Fountain was displayed and photographed at Alfred Stieglitz’s studio, and the photo published in The Blind Man, but the original has been lost. The work is regarded by some art historians and theorists of the avant-garde, such as Peter Bürger, as a major landmark in 20th century art.

 Can the truth of piece of art be different for different people, and if so is it really “truth”?

 1. Who decides what makes art good or bad? Can art be good even if its technically poor but has a strong emotion, feeling or message attached? 

2. Is art a personal experience where the viewer gets to decide what it means through their own rationalizations or is it determined through authority, and societal consensus?
