Research Current Trends
National Survey Findings Few libraries are creating online tutorials. Reasons for not offering custom training include: staff time, patron interest and cost. Most large systems have less than a.75 FTE dedicated to patron training. Many offer access to subscription services with tutorial content. Instruction content selection is primarily done through staff and patron suggestions
National Survey Recommendations Create online instructional tools that can be shared across many libraries. Identify and market existing high-quality online instructional tools. Identify and market free or low-cost soft ware that allows libraries to create simple personalized tutorials or videos. Encourage library systems to establish training committees. Provide library systems with training or tools to conduct local needs assessments and training evaluations
