Mind’s On – Far North Reminder Very simply brainstorm a list of ideas of what comes to mind when thinking of Canada’s far north…

Mind’s On – Quote Analysis “The old path is a proven path to travel on, it has withstood the test of time, not only for centuries, but over thousands of years. This is the path my ancestors walked and it shall be the path my future generations will walk on and on and on. It is the path of the Great Spirit, the Creator. We are the Great Spirit’s people! These mountains are our sacred places!” Identify 3-5 things you liked/disliked about his quote Get up an compare with at least two other people

Identify Nunavut Grab an atlas from the side of the room, and with a partner identify some key places in Nunavut and the northern provinces

Mining in the North - Perspectives Read the accounts of mining in the north. Write down what you think the perspectives of those impacted would be to form your own opinion on resource extraction in the north

Nunavut Self Determination and Self Government in Practice

Aspects of Self-Determination Self-Government By being accountable to their own communities instead of other levels of government the values and needs of that community are considered in the best possible way. As such, political groups or institutions without true knowledge of traditional ways are not in control.

Aspects of Self-Determination Economic Development Indigenous communities can be self-reliant if able to create jobs, businesses and industries. Self-reliance leads to a greater sense of autonomy from other levels of government.

Health Care Self determination helps integrating traditional methods into current practices or using traditional methods This will naturally promote cultural continuity Education Having control of this can help instil traditional languages, values and cultures in the younger generation Traditional education can help reinforce identity, esteem, and community pride

Policing and Justice Self-policing – meaning reserves have the right to police their own communities – helps establish trust with legal authority Traditional beliefs in justice help promote community order Often, the focus is on rehabilitation and healing the offender rather than direct imprisonment. This belief has become a strong element of the mainstream justice system (Restorative Justice/Healing Circles)

Wrap-Up – Statement Compare Compare this statement to the first one. How is it similar/different? Does this statement change your ‘Likes’ from your first assessment? “Indigenous peoples have the right to self-determination. By virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.” (Article 3, Universal Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, United Nation)
