When Napoleon returns from war he is asked to take control of the government and the country. Coup d’etat- Seizing Power with force. Napoleon uses the French army to take control of the government. Napoleon takes full control of the government and its powers and becomes a dictator.

Napoleon Rules France 1800 Napoleon pretends to rule France by following the French constitution (rules of government) A Plebiscite, vote of citizens is taken and citizens agree that Napoleon should rule will full power and control. Changing France As ruler, Napoleon allows changes made during the Revolution to stay as they are. Napoleon supports laws that give more power to the government.

Napoleon’s Steps of Change Directions: Using your textbook, read pages 230 to 231 and complete the handout titled “Napoleon Forges and Empire” As you read, find each action, write down the goal that Napoleon had by performing the action, and what happened once the action took place. ActionsGoal(s)Result(s) Napoleon established a national bank and tax-collection system Get the economy on its feet and make sure the country had money Government had better control over countries money Napoleon created and enforced the Napoleonic Code of Law More control over the peopleStopped crime, made everyone equal, and promoted authority Napoleon sent troops to Saint Dominique Take control of the colonyThe French army fails because of disease Napoleon sold the Louisiana Territory to the United States To gain moneyUnited States gains new land, and France gains money Napoleon has the French navy fight in the Battle of Trafalgar Step in Napoleons effort to control Europe French navy is defeated by the British navy

Changing France Napoleon’s Steps 1. Fix the economy by starting a new tax system, gave the government more money and control over money. 2. Napoleon gets rid of corrupt government workers and replaces them with trained officials that are trained in lycees (government schools) 3. Napoleon signs a concordat (agreement) with the Pope of the Catholic church to allow the church and government to work together. Napoleon gains the support of the Church. 4. Napoleonic Code- system of laws created by Napoleon that were equal for all citizens, but limited citizen freedoms.

Napoleon becomes Emperor 1804 Napoleon makes himself emperor. Napoleon becomes more powerful than the Catholic Church. Napoleon has more power than the original French kings, like Louis XVI.

The New French Empire Napoleon wanted to control all of Europe and wanted to control parts of America.

French Empire Loses Land 1789 A civil war breaks out on the island country of Saint Dominique (Haiti) Slaves and people living on the island demanded that the French government gives them more rights and freedom, and they take over the island to get what they want Napoleon has the French army try to take control of the island. Disease and fighting destroys the French army and Napoleon decides to let the country go. Deal with the U.S. Napoleon sells France’s land in the U.S. for $15 million Napoleon thought it would give him money to fight more wars

Controlling Europe Even though France controlled much of Europe, Napoleon wanted to control even more land. European Nations Britain convinces Russia, Austria, and Sweden to work together to fight and stop Napoleon. Napoleon defeats the armies of other nations in numerous battles across Europe and from this France gains land.

Map Activity: Napoleon’s War Turn in your textbook to page 232. Using the blank map of Europe that I have handed out to you and four different colored pencils, color in the blank map using the map presented to you on page 232. Make sure that you label the different empires that appear on the map. Make sure that you label the different battles that took place during the war. Peace in Europe European Nations Terrible loses cause Austria, Prussia, and Russia to sign a peace treaty with France. Britain was the only country fighting against Napoleon. Battle of Trafalgar Only loss of Napoleon’s army Battle off the coast of Spain, where the British navy defeated and captured the French navy The British navy would control the seas for over 100 years Napoleon could not invade Britain

End of the French Empire 1812 Napoleon controlled most of Europe Britain, Portugal, Sweden, and the Ottoman Empire were not controlled by Napoleon Many countries that Napoleon controlled, he allowed their rulers to stay in power but he controlled them like puppets. Countries like Russia, Prussia, and Austria worked with Napoleon and France because they feared war with France. As emperor, Napoleon could only control the new French Empire from 1807 to 1812, because his actions after 1812 tore the French Empire apart and made him lose his power.
