The Directory In 1795 another Constitution is drafted. An executive group of five men is established called the Directory. The Directory was corrupt and inefficient. The French grow restless with high prices and food shortages. Napoleon restores order and fights the Second Coalition. Napoleon takes power in a coup d’etat in 1799.

Napoleon’s Empire is known as the Napoleonic Era. Napoleon took the title of First Consul. The people voted on Napoleon’s new Constitution by plebiscite, yes or no. Law was codified into the Napoleonic Code. The National Bank of France was established. A national education system
