Science Starter What are the 3 types of blood cells? *Turn in your project summary to the box *Take out your permission slip and place it at the front of the table (DUE FRIDAY!) What are the 3 types of blood cells? What makes red blood cells unique? How many blood types exist? What is the difference between a universal donor and a universal recipient? What determines your blood type?

Today’s Agenda Science Starter What are antigens & antibodies? Virtual Blood Typing Lab Exit Quiz **Unit 5 Test on Cardiovascular System is Friday, Study Guide tomorrow!**

A story… In the early 1920s a young woman becomes pregnant with her first child. Her pregnancy goes smoothly and she gives birth to a healthy young girl.

A story… 2 years later she becomes pregnant with her second child. However, during this pregnancy her baby experiences difficulties and she suffers a miscarriage.

A story… She wants to have another baby and is lucky enough to become pregnant a 3rd time. The baby boy makes it to birth, but is born with jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes) and anemia. The doctor’s say this is because the baby boy’s red blood cells are being destroyed by the mother’s immune system.

What are antigens and antibodies? What is an antigen? a toxin or other foreign substance that induces an immune response in the body, especially the production of antibodies. What is an antibody? a blood protein produced in response to and counteracting a specific antigen. Antibodies combine chemically with substances that the body recognizes as alien, such as bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances in the blood. How does this relate to blood type? A blood group is any of the various types of human blood whose antigen characteristics determine compatibility in transfusion. http://science.howstuffworks.com/life/29846-understanding-antibodies-video.htm

Rh or Hemolytic disease Antibodies form the mother pass through the placenta and attack the fetus, can typically happen in later children (not first born) Second Born Child Rh- Rh+ Second Born Child Rh- Rh+ First Born Child Rh- Rh+
