Cell Theory All organisms are made of one or more cells. The cell is the basic unit of all living things. All cells come from existing cells.

Cell membrane- protective barrier that encloses a cell. Cytoplasm- fluid inside of cell Cell membrane & Cytoplasm

Nucleus- Contains the cell’s DNA. Nucleolus- dark area inside the nucleus that begins to make ribosomes Nucleus

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)- system of folded membranes in which proteins, lipid and other materials are transported to other parts of the cell. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum- Close to nucleus has ribosomes on it Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum- lacks ribosomes Endoplasmic Reticulum

Ribosomes- organelle that makes proteins -smallest organelle Ribosomes

Mitochondria- The organelle in which sugar is broken down to produce energy. (ATP) “The mighty mitochondria” Powerhouse of the cell Mitochondria

Golgi Complex- membrane that surrounds (packages) substances inside the cells so it can move around the cell. Golgi Complex

Lysosomes- Organelle that digests food particles, waste, damaged cell parts, & foreign invaders Lysosomes

Vacuoles- Stores water and other liquids Vacuoles

Cell wall- rigid structure that supports the cell 2 2 Chloroplast- organelle which uses the energy from the sun, water & CO 2 to make sugar & O 2 Cell wall & Chloroplast Organelles found in plant cells
