Presentation transcript:

Galatians 3:1-9

1.In verse 2 Paul asked the Galatians how they received the Spirit. What were the two options Paul gave them for their answer? (Include verse 3 in your discussion.) By obeying the law or believing the Gospel 2.What do you think brought on the suffering the Galatians endured? (Verse 3) (verse 5:11) Their stand against works righteousness.

3.Read 1 Corinthians 12:3 and Romans 10:17. How does the Holy Spirit come to us? How does the church do its miraculous work today? Faith comes from the Holy Spirit working through the message of the Gospel. By proclaiming the Gospel 4.How did Abraham become righteous? Why are we called Abraham’s children? By faith Genesis 15:6 We are his spiritual descendants

5.How was the way God blessed Abraham meant to be the pattern for his blessing all people? Just as Abraham was justified by faith, so are we. 6.What has been your experience? How did the Holy Spirit come to you? Answers will vary

7.Can you give examples of how Lutherans fall into this temptation of trying to obtain salvation by works? Answers will vary 8.In this section, why does Paul call the Galatians foolish? They knew the blessings of salvation by faith alone and still went back to earning it.

Galatians 3: What does God say about us if we (or anyone) tries to find blessings through the law? (verse 10) We are under a curse 2.What is the difference between the law and the gospel? Law = shows us our sin Gospel shows us our Savior

Law = found in conscience and Bible Gospel = only in the Bible Law – tells us what to do to be saved Gospel – tells us what God has done to save us Law = condemns us Gospel = Saves us More?

3. Why does mixing the law with the gospel destroy the gospel? (verses 11,12) It turns free salvation into something we have to earn 4.What does it mean that Christ redeemed us from the law? He bought us back from its power to curse us

5. Why did Christ redeem us from the law? (verses 13,14) So that we might have the same blessing as Abraham – Eternal life 6.Why does Paul introduce the idea of the covenant mentioned in verse 15? Use this question to uncover the point Paul is making in this section. A contract can’t be broken; so the law can not undo the Gospel given earlier to Abraham

7.Why do people naturally try to mix law with gospel? Our sinful nature wants to believe it is good and is capable of earning God’s favor
