How Do We Get Out of the Great Depression?

What Were Workers Doing? How were workers responding to the Great Depression? What had the government done to try to help workers? Had the government done enough to try and help start the economy and help workers?

WHAT IS THIS???

Political Change! Remember William Lyon Mackenzie King? Could have used a filter when talking… Said he would not give a “5-cent piece” to a Conservative Provincial Government Lost support after denying financial help to those provinces

Enter: R. B. Bennett & the Conservative Party What do you know about the Conservative Party? Against aiding the poor using government money Introduced programs anyway, because the Depression was so bad Will they work? Let’s find out!

Read: From “The Government Response” Pages And After in Pairs: Did the government do enough to help the poor? What else do you think they could have done to help, given the problems people were facing? Did workers think they did enough? How do you know?

Bennett’s New Deal Taxed the rich more than the poor Gave current workers insurance for illness, injury, unemployment Better worker rights Better Old Age Pension for 65+ Regulated wheat prices to help protect farmers from changes in market price

Homework and Study Time Fill out the handout on political parties of Canada in the 30’s Key terms sheet should also be completed for your own benefit while studying for the test on This Friday Any Questions?
