Short Story Elements Some basics that every good story must have …. By B. Hergott R.C.S.S. English

Every story needs characters People Animals Or Creatures

The protagonist is the “good guy”

The antagonist is the “bad guy” or force

Great stories have a conflict Man vs. Man Man vs. NatureMan vs. Society Man vs. Himself Man vs. Machine

A hint about what will happen next is called foreshadowing For example, if you hear this: Then you know someone’s about to get eaten!

The time and place of the story is the setting

The climax is the most exciting part!!

The point of view is the perspective of the story “That rotten wolf tried to eat us!!!!” “I was framed! I just wanted to borrow a cup of sugar!”

Point of View (POV) – the angle from which the story is told; the type of narrator telling the story  Narrator – a speaker or character who tells the story  First Person Narrator : when a character in the story tells the story  Innocent Eye: the story is told through the eyes of a child (his/her judgment being different from that of an adult)  Stream of consciousness: the story is told so that the reader feels that they are inside the head of one of the characters and knows all their thoughts and reactions  Third Person Narrator: when a voice outside the story tells the story Types of Third Person Narrators: Omniscient – an all-knowing narrator who knows how every character thinks and feels. Omniscient Limited – sees the world through the eyes of only one character. Omniscient Objective – tells the story from outside the action without direct knowledge of the thoughts or feelings of the characters

Whether you’re the reader, or the writer, a great story includes all these literary elements!!! conflict setting point of view climax characters protagonist antagonist foreshadowing
