The What? Our current working definition – subject to modification. –Dual Optical Metropolitan Network Rings utilizing 63 miles of IRU/lease/University fiber. –10 Cisco Dense Wave Division Multiplexing nodes. –Co-location in the Rochester downtown GigaPOP. –Connects University Resources to Campus and the Internet in collaboration with Rochester Institute of Technology.

Logical Network Overview

The Why? Enhance research network capabilities. Eliminate costly Telco local loop. Eliminate increasing Telco costs to enhance off-site connectivity. Provision bandwidth without vendor interaction, expense and time -- flexibility. Significant bandwidth potential -- you can do a lot with two fibers and we have a spare pair as well.

The Key Success Factors Strong advocates across campus. Joint collaboration locally with RIT. Aligned with NYSERNet statewide. Positioned for future large bandwidth collaborations. Makes sense from a business perspective and ROI (cost avoidance and efficiencies). Strong technical staff -- not plug and play.

That’s all folks “ Committed to supporting teaching, learning, research, and health care service at the University of Rochester.”
