Some Highlights

My Year as Interim CIO

Campus Transitions  New Campus CIO  My new role as Associate Chancellor  ARM re-org

Personal Observations: IET  We’ve got excellent talent! Need to exploit our abilities, expertise, and contributions  We’re doing great things for UC Davis Need to remember to connect what we do to campus priorities  We don’t always focus on broader impact Need to prioritize systematically Need to complete what we start and in a timely manner  We’ve made great strides this year Continue Insider, staff meetings, Coffee with the CIO, etc. Strengthened partnerships; continue to build new ones Continue to enhance customer service, assess customer satisfaction

Observations: Campus IT  Today’s Campus CIO = the CIO of IET, NOT the CIO of the whole campus  Campus IT: too distributed, lacks coordination  Focus is more on local optimization vs. broader and long-term benefits  Lack of synergy bet. business process & IT support  RoI, full costs are not always assessed  Uncoordinated decision-making has led to increased cost, inefficiencies, and potential risks

What Can We Do?  Avoid redundancy  Coordinate IT investment decisions  Standardize to the extent feasible  Facilitate cooperation and partnerships  Share knowledge, experience, skills & resources  Do strategic planning on a broader scale  Do early, detailed and sustainable cost/investment analysis

A Proposal: Philosophy  Coordinated IT Support -- overall cost effectiveness, efficiency & sustainability  Coordinated distributed operations All campus-wide admin IT operations would be coordinated (lightweight) Some services, applications and support can be integrated across a set of units Function-related services managed exclusively by the business units

Campus IT Coordination
