Straw Activity Instructions: Safety is first in this activity. It is not a competition. You must govern your own comfort levels. 1. You are each going to get a straw. Please do not do anything with the straw until the teacher has given you directions. 2. When we begin you will be breathing through the straw. To do this you need to close your mouth around the straw and hold your nose. 3. Try this please. Before we begin I want to remind you this is not a competition.

Step 1: When the teacher says go, please breathe through the straw at your table. Do not worry about others. If you feel uncomfortable at anytime, please take the straw out of your mouth and breathe normally. Step 2: When the teacher says go, you are going to breathe through the straw again, but this time I am going to tell you to do some things. Again, if you feel uncomfortable at anytime, please take the straw out of your mouth, sit down and breathe normally. Step 3: When the teacher says go, you will be doing some things for a little longer this time while breathing through the straw. Again, if you feel uncomfortable at anytime, please take the straw out of your mouth, sit down and breath normally.

The purpose of this activity was to simulate 3 of the lung diseases caused by smoking. Step 1- simulated what breathing with smoking induced asthma is like. Step 2- simulated what breathing with smoking induced bronchitis is like. Step 3- simulated what breathing with emphysema caused by smoking is like. Smoking causes damage to the lungs.
