History This is a centuries old tradition that reaches back to a time when regular seasonal markets took place Christmas markets were one that was welcomed during the cold winter months These markets were more than what we see today – many vendors would layout all their goods on the street hoping to sell it all Only local tradesmen were allowed to sell their wares, which has led to the distinctive character you see today in many markets

Where are they held? Usually the Christmas market was held in front of the cities main church to attract church-goers But one day in 1616, a priest complained that the markets were so enticing that no one came to his afternoon service. Many markets today are held in a large part of town, typically in front of the Rathaus (town hall) or in the Hauptmarkt (main square)

Nuremberg The Christmas market in Nuremberg is considered the one of Germany’s most famous Christmas markets Dating back to 1628, it brings back the Teutonic times during the festive season The main market is held in the Hauptmarkt (Main square) This market is busy with many visitors, sampling the different foods they have to offer and trying delicious warm drinks This market has a policy where handcrafted goods are the only merchandise allowed to sell. Christmas Gift The nutcracker is one of the most popular and sought after gifts at Christmas markets It was first developed in 1870 The Thuringian Forest is where many skilled craftsmen created many items from the wood in the forest Often Nutcrackers are made fro the image of authorities, especially kings or soldiers and were used to mock them.

Music Boxes and Figures Each piece is handcrafted and delicately hand enameled. Each one is a unique masterpiece This invention goes back to the 18thy century At first it was just a simple toy, but now it has developed into something more. Inside is a set of delicate clockwork mechanics, able to play Christmas music They also have a wooden scene, often of a nativity scene or from a fairy tale

Beeswax Candles and Glass Ornaments Beeswax candles are a popular thing to purchase at Christmas markets Candles are ideal to illuminate those dark winter months Glass ornaments are also a popular part of the shopping experience Many of them are created from blown glass and tinsel The first Christmas ornament in a glass form was made about 400 years ago in Erzgebirge. Today many vendors will compete for the biggest and best hand blown and decorated designs.

German Food Warm drinks are very popular during the Christmas time in Germany Glühwein is one of the most popular drinks made from red wine that is warmed with spices and herbs People usually grab a cup of it and wake around the market These stands also sell hot chocolate, coffee and other warm drinks for people that are not fans of Glühwein

German Bratwurst Another popular treat during this time of the year is a bratwurst One of the oldest known bratwurst comes from Thuringia, grilled over a charcoal fire and containing a spicy flavor Typically they are pretty cheap and they are plenty of food for one person or to even share with another!

Lebkucken This is a very traditional baked Christmas treat Similar to gingerbread and served with a cup of tea or coffee The most popular regional variety of the Nürnberger Lebkuchen It is often known as a honey cake or pepper cake They are either rectangular or round Often popular at a Christmas market, Lebkucken hearts are sold to couples with messages such as “Ich liebe dich”
