  Used to signal different commands from officers to soldiers   Signaled chow time, formation, pay to time, “charge”, and other things   They walked around the battlefield looking for the wounded and brought them to medical care when not drumming signals   It was as dangerous as being a soldier, but without a weapon Civil War Drummers
