Acids and Bases. Acids When acids dissolve in water, they ionize (form ions). When acids ionize, they form H+ ions. These H+ ions give acids their properties.
Science Survey ACIDS AND BASES. ACIDS Acids donate H+ ions to form hydronium ions, H when dissolved in water. Acids have a pH of less than 7. pH=

How do you decide what water to drink?

KEY VOCABULARY Acid A material that acts as if it were the opposite of a base in a reaction. Acids taste sour and are usually very corrosive. A strong acid has a pH below 1 on the pH scale. Base A substance that acts in an opposite way to an acid in a reaction. Bases taste bitter and are usually corrosive. Bases have a pH higher than 7. Dissolved solids Any solid materials dissolved in water, typically while the water is in contact with earth materials. Dissolved solids are most commonly metal ions like calcium, sodium, and magnesium. Distilled water Water that has been heated and re-condensed so as to drive off mineral impurities. Distilled water may have a slightly acidic pH. Spring water Water that comes from an underground spring or comes out of the ground on its own and may be bottled.
