CS 113: Academic Strategies for the Business Professional Unit 8: Career Connections

Unit 8 Seminar Agenda  Initial greetings and welcome  Connecting all we’ve learned  KU Career Resources, O*Net, Optimal Resume service  Interview project overview  Case Study  General questions and answers

Making those connections Unit 8 Objectives  Recognize how the combination of using resources, networking, and goal setting promotes effective Career Planning

Something to think about… “The best career advice to give to people is to find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it!” ~Katherine Whitehorn, British journalist

Discussion Question How do you determine which career is right for YOU?

Choosing the “right” career This can be a hard question to answer! There are many OPTIONS to consider. There are many elements that shape this decision (values, skills and abilities, geographic location, just to name a few)

Career Resources What are some resources you have available to you to help with your career search?

Resources to help YOU!  Internet (O*Net)  Networking  KU Career Resources  Word of mouth  Friends, family members  Classifieds

Let’s take a field trip… 1. Go to your KU Campus homepage. 2. Under the University Info tab on the top tool bar click Career Resources 3. Start searching!! It’s that easy.

Career Resources…it’s a click away!

Career Resources, cont.

Career Resources Mission and purpose of the Career Resources Center: Career Resources is a student-focused service that provides comprehensive career planning to Kaplan University students at all levels of study and to Kaplan University alumni. Our experienced career specialists and career coaches empower individuals to make and implement well- conceived career/life plans by providing expertise, resources, and support.

KU Career Services Resources  Career Guidance  Resume and cover letter information  Interview tips  Career goal timeline information  Career searches by major

OptimalResume.com  Offered in collaboration with the Career Resources services  Additional help with resumes, cover letters, portfolio building  Does require a login and password

The interview project The interview project was discussed in Unit 7, and is not due until Unit 8. Download the template from the Assignment tab in Unit 7 or Unit 8. Hopefully by now you have selected the person you are going to interview. If not, it’s time to get busy!

Interview project, cont.  The person you interview should be employed in the field you are planning to enter (can be retired too)  This paper should be submitted into the Unit 8 Dropbox  Questions or concerns? Anyone having trouble finding someone?  I have had a few students ask if it’s okay to do more than one interview. YES!! That is fine and can give you many additional insights. I want this assignment to be helpful for YOU!

End to term reminders 1. We will have a seminar in Unit 9, but not in Unit No DB in Unit 10, so Unit 9 is your last unit for graded DB work 3. Written assignment in Unit 9 (Career Action Plan) 4. Short written assignment in Unit 10 about what you have learned from this class. 5. Unit 9 and Unit 10 are now open so you can begin reading ahead on these assignments if you wish.

Unit 8 Case Study: Minh

Case Study discussion Question 1: How is Minh's current job beneficial to her ultimate career goals? Question 2: How would setting more specific career goals help Minh make decisions? Question 3: What general advice would you give Minh to encourage her to complete the quarter and continue in school?
