What is “Noise?” Often, there are an overwhelming amount of voices, pieces of advice, and expectations coming at you from family, teachers, counselors, and society. These voices tend to drown out your own voice and individual expression and can be referred to as “noise”. UNIT 2 LESSON 1 4

What is My Foundation? To keep true to your own voice and individual expression, you need to start with something that is a foundation for you. Think of a foundation as something that is most important to you and makes you the individual you are today! Often times it is difficult to really see where you want to go until you identify your foundation. Finding My Way Through the “Noise” Questions What am I being told my future should look like? What is my ideal vision for my college/educational experience after high school? What am I thinking in terms of a future career and life in general? What are the biggest fears or challenges that I face as a student right now? What are my biggest dreams for college and the road beyond? What obstacles could potentially get in the way of my dreams? UNIT 2 LESSON 1 Adapted from Roadmap: The Get-It-Together Guide for Figuring Out What to Do with Your Life. By Gebhard, N., McAllister, B., & Marriner, M. 7

Shedding the “Noise” The tricky part of having the noise all around you is distinguishing the advice of well- meaning people who give it to you with good intentions and your best interests at heart from the “noise” of people who really don’t know you as an individual and who don’t offer helpful advice. Finding My Way Through the “Noise” Questions How can you distinguish between negative “noise” and useful feedback? How can you shed the “noise” by being aware of the expectations you have for yourself and your future? Share your thoughts on the following statement regarding “noise”: “If the message you’re hearing takes into account who you are as an individual, and it rings true, chances are it isn’t the Noise. If the message raises that gut-churning feeling of “This is not me,” It’s the Noise.” UNIT 2 LESSON 1 Adapted from Roadmap: The Get-It-Together Guide for Figuring Out What to Do with Your Life.
