NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area TEAM CULTURE

NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area What is a Team? “ A team is a unit with a task that no individual members can do alone”. (Andrews, 2000, p. 3)

NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area A team is: “A collection of people working together cohesively to achieve an agreed, desired result, goal or outcome, in a way which maximises the skills and talents of all the members without compromising their values or ethics”. (Andrews, 2000, p.3)

NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area The Culture of an Organisation The culture of an organisation, such as a team, is built around a pattern of shared assumptions and seen in its system of heroes, language, action, shared values, happening, rituals, symbols, beliefs and team myths. This culture impacts upon team effectiveness and cohesion and must be considered by the coach. (McConnell, 2000)

NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area Team Culture Coaching is about people…. Coaches earn trust…. Successful coaches enable motivation by building the coach-player relationship before anything else. It’s all about people

NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area Team Culture “Be more interested in finding the best way, not just having it your way”. (John Wooden, p.64)

NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area Describing Team Culture How would we like our team or group to: –Look? –Sound? –Feel?

NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success (John Wooden) Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self- satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming

NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area What do great teams look like? Team goals and purpose Clear individual roles Communication Participation Team decision making Constant improvement Problem solving and critiquing Conflict resolution (Andrews, 2000)

NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area What makes a winning team? The team needs to know what it’s doing and to have agreed what its direction and expectations are. Individual team members need to be able to speak their minds freely and with security, to say when they disagree or don’t understand without feeling that it is personal (Andrews, 2000)

NZ Coach Development Framework- Leadership Learning Area What makes a winning team? Different team members need to bring different skills to the team and as long as everything you need is covered somewhere in the team you can do it There has to be a sense of belonging The way that problems are explored and decisions taken is on the basis of conventions and processes that work and are known to work (Andrews, 2000)
