Art Masterpiece “Surprised! Storm in the Forest” Henri Rousseau Today in Art Masterpiece, we learned about Henri Rousseau and his phantasmagoric jungle paintings. Rousseau taught himself to paint as a hobby, while he was working as a customs officer in Paris during the late 19 th century. (Hence his nickname “Le Douanier”, or “The Customs Officer”). He painted his jungle landscapes from memories of visits to the botanical gardens and zoos in Paris, and used his avid imagination to recreate scenes of wild animals, such as lions, tigers, monkeys and snakes in a lush tropical paradise. Although turned away by the famous Salon des Artistes for being too “primitive”, Rousseau exhibited his works at the Salon des Independents from 1884 until his death in 1910, along with artists such as Monet, and Renoir. He gained recognition from his fellow artists late in life, (Pablo Picasso gave a huge party in his honor in 1908), but did not become world-famous until several years after his death.
