D IGGS -L ATHAM : P ROFILE Location: 986 Hutton St. Winston-Salem, NC (off of Peter’s Creek Parkway). Magnet School for Visual and Performing Arts (one of 17 K-12 magnet schools in district; enrollment preference given to students in school’s residential area). PK-5 Total number of students ≈ 410 (based on school year). Lower than both the average for district and state. Demographics: 53.7% Hispanic, 38.6% African American, 6% White, 1.7% Multi Title I School

C URRICULUM G OALS Strategic Plan: 1. Globally Competitive Students st Century Personnel 3. Safe & Caring Schools st Century Systems 5. D IGGS -L ATHAM : EOG PERFORMANCE School’s Designation: Priority School ( School Year)  expected growth not received. Though EOG scores were slowly trending upwards from , they saw ≈ 9% decline in student performance in both reading and math during the school year. Reading scores for Grades 3 and 4 were anywhere from % below the district and state percentages. Grade 5 about 9% below. Math scores for Grades 3 and 4 were anywhere from 12-15% below the district and state percentages. Grade 5 only 1.2% below.

D IGGS - LATHAM : RESOURCES Average age of library collection: 2000 (3-4 years more recent than district and state). Number of books per student: 39 (more than twice that of district and state). Number of students per digital learning device: 0.97 Number of students per internet connected learning device: % of classrooms connected to the internet Media Playgroup: A weekly collaboration between teachers, administrators and SML to focus on media/technology and sharing ideas and techniques with one another.

When considered with the 16% teacher turnover rate for (higher than district and state), this data could suggest the need for professional development opportunities within and outside of the school.

D IGGS - LATHAM MEDIA CENTER Employs three staff members: media coordinator, technology specialist, and media assistant. Media Center Information as part of the school’s website has not been regularly updated. Use of Wikispaces, podcasts, helpful educational links, resources for teachers, book fairs, global awareness projects, magazine blog, etc.

W INSTON - SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA 4 th largest city in NC Population: 229,000 Demographics (2010): 51.2% White, 34.7% black, 14.7% Hispanic, 1.13% Asian, etc. 11.2% of population below the poverty line 4.3% of families below poverty line (≈918 out of 76,247 households). Unemployment rate: 8.4% Language other than English spoken at home: 16.6%.

D ISTRICT P ARTNERSHIPS The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System actively partners with businesses in the community. Their website provides a list of their participating Systemwide Partners: The only partnership cited for Diggs-Latham is Centenary Methodist Church, in contrast to most schools which have several partnerships. This suggests more work should be done forming partnerships and collaborating with the entrepreneurial sides of the community.

C ONNECT YOUR COMMUNITY ( CYC ) A partnership of WinstonNet, Winston- Salem/Forsyth County Schools, and Forsyth County Public Library to increase Internet access in Forsyth County. Offers free internet and computer classes for adults that range from basic skills to social networking to communicating with your child’s school. Information last updated in 2011
