Homicide Culpable Homicide The killing of another human being, directly or indirectly Culpable Homicide A killing for which the accused can be held legally responsible Example: Murder

Non-Culpable Homicide A killing for which a person cannot be held legally responsible Example: An accident Soldier acting under order in times of war Self defence or defending another person

Murder The intentional killing of another human being

First Degree Murder A killing that is planned and deliberate, is the result of a contract, causes death of a peace officer i.e. police officer, or is committed during another serious crime i.e. kidnapping, sexual assault Example: Paul Bernardo Maximum Penalty: Life Imprisonment, may apply for parole after 25 years

Second Degree Murder Any murder not classified as first-degree murder. Example: Robert Pickton (pig farmer) Maximum Penalty: Life Imprisonment, may apply for parole after 10 years
