CREATING AN ACTIVIST WORKSHOP CURRICULUM “CULTIVATING FOOD SOVEREIGNTY THROUGH URBAN AGRICULTURE”

Workshops are created by activists, for activists United Students Against Sweatshops National Conference, Feb. 2012

Mountain Justice Spring Break March 2012

Provide spaces for activists to learn from both the workshop material and each other

Organizations often post curricula online as resources for others in the field

Format varies but there are several key elements to the genre

Clear and informative title stating the topic

Purpose and learning objectives to orient the facilitator towards specific goals

Group introductions allow participants to share and get to know each other

Introduction to the topic contextualizes the issues

Relevant facts and statistics concretely inform participants about the issue

Specific questions for the facilitator to ask the audience are included to create discussion

Clear points of discussion help the facilitator guide a focused group conversation

Group activities engage the workshop participants in thoughtful discourse

Sections of the curriculum provide suggested time limits

Facilitator’s notes provide further information on how to teach the workshop

Workshops often close by summarizing the discussion and asking further questions
