Lesson 21 2 Kings 12:4–14:6 2 Chronicles 24:4–25:4

Judah  Athaliah is dead  Joash is king  Jehoiada is the high priest  The temple is 150 years old  Athaliah had abused it during her idol worship  Joash want it repaired 2 Chronicles 24:7 For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken into the house of God, and had also presented all the dedicated things of the house of the LORD to the Baals.

Repairing the Temple  Joash commands the priest to collect taxes  The priest and Levites delayed  Joash saw no progress was made  He called them in again  A chest was placed in the temple to collect offerings

Repairing the Temple  Money from the chest was paid to the workers  The workers were ‘faithful’ (honest) with their work and pay  The work was done according to the original plans of the temple  After the work was completed, other money was used to make vessels

Death of Jehoiada  Jehoiada is 130 years old  He has been faithful in his service  His influence has helped keep Judah faithful in the sepulcher of the kings  He is buried in the sepulcher of the kings in Jerusalem  37 th year of Joash, king of Judah

Joash after Jehoiada  Princes of Judah make request of Joash… apparently re: idol worship  Joash yields to their request  Zechariah, Jehoiada’s son, warns Judah about the idolatry  “Because you have forsaken Jehovah, He has forsaken you.”  Joash commands that Zechariah be stoned “I will be your God, if you will be My people” hate to be always confined to the dull old-fashioned service of the temple it is that they may set up the groves and idols again which were thrown down in the beginning of his reign, for they hate to be always confined to the dull old-fashioned service of the temple

Hazael Attacks Judah  Hazael had already subdued Israel  He captures the Philistine city of Gath  He sends a small army to Jerusalem  Joash surrenders; some officials are killed a small company because they had forsaken the LORD God  2 Chronicles 24:24 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; but the LORD delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.

Death of Joash  Hazael left Joash wounded  Two of his own officials killed him  They were avenging the blood of Zechariah not  Joash was buried in Jerusalem, but not in the sepulchers of the kings  Amaziah, his son, is now king in Judah

Amaziah, king in Judah  25 years old when he became king  Reigned 29 years  2 Chronicles 25:2 And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a loyal heart.  Idolatry continued  Executed the ones who killed his father

Israel  Jehu reigned 28 years and is buried in Samaria  Jehoahaz, his son, is now king  He is the first of four descendants of Jehu that will sit on the throne followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin  2 Kings 13:2 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin. He did not depart from them.

Jehoahaz  The Lord delivered Israel into the hands of Hazael, king of Syria  Jehoahaz is left with (essentially) no army  Finally, in desperation he pleads to the Lord for help  The Lord sent a deliverer did not depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin  2 Kings 13:6 Nevertheless they did not depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin, but walked in them; and the wooden image also remained in Samaria. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

New Kings  Jehoahaz dies and his son, Jehoash (Joash), is now king in Israel  Hazael, king of Syria, dies and his son, Ben-hadad, is now king in Damascus

Elisha’s Deathbed  Elisha is very old and is deathly ill  Joash, king of Israel, went to visit him  Joash recognized the strength Elisha had been in Israel— Jehovah’s representative  Draw you bow and shoot—Israel will consume Syria  How many times? Only three

Kingdom Relationships  JUDAH  Jehoshaphat  Jehoram  Ahaziah  Athaliah  Joash  Amaziah  ISRAEL  Ahab – Jezebel Ahaziah Jehoram Athaliah  Jehu  Jehoahaz  Jehoash (Joash) approx 800 B.C.

Joash after Jehoiada  Princes of Judah make request of Joash Apparently re: idol worship  Joash yields to their request  Zechariah, Jehoiada’s son, warns Judah about the idolatry  “Because you have forsaken Jehovah, He has forsaken you.”  Joash commands that Zechariah be stoned Lessons Galatians 4:16 Have I therefore become your enemy because I tell you the truth?

Elisha’s Deathbed  Elisha is very old and is deathly ill  Joash, king of Israel, went to visit him  Joash recognized the strength Elisha had been in Israel— Jehovah’s representative  Draw you bow and shoot—Israel will consume Syria  How many times? Only three God is NOT limited. How often do we limit ourselves?? Why not five or six? My God is so big, so strong, and so mighty! There's nothing my God cannot do! The mountains are His. The valleys are His. The stars are His handiwork too! My God is so big, so strong, and so mighty! There's nothing my God cannot do!
