What is Turnitin? Turn-it-in A computerized tool in ensuring that papers/reports written by student is free from plagiarism.
Why should we use Turnitin? VAST DATABASE 20+ billion pages of web content 220 million student papers and publications PREVENT PLAGIARISM ENGAGE STUDENTS A high Similarity Percentage will engage the students to take extra effort in trying to improve the report.
Turnitin report will display the percentage of similarities based on: Green : 1 -24% of Similarity Yellow Yellow : 25 – 49% of Similarity Orange : % of Similarity Red : 75 – 100% of Similarity SIMILARITY PERCENTAGE for FYP is not more than 30% If more than 30%, you will get F grade (indicate PLAGIARISM)
HOW TO START USING TURNITIN?
Your coordinators will enroll you in a class and create an assignment under that class They will put in your name and your – same address during FYP registration EXAMPLE: Name of class: FYP1 S2_1415 Name of assignment: FYP 1 Report
You will receive a notification from Turnitin

Assignment Click submit to hand in your report
You will see the SIMILARITY PERCENTAGE straight away after first time submission. For resubmission, the SIMILARITY PERCENTAGE will be generated after 24 hours from your resubmission.
Click on the SIMILARITY percentage – Another window will appear

Important Notes: Use only Turnitin account registered by your FYP coordinator (no personal account, no supervisor’s account etc) FYP coordinator will refer to submission’s list as proof of your report submission to Turnitin If FYP1 report submission date is 15 th May 2015 (5.00pm), your Turnitin account will be activated until 14 th May 2015 (5.00pm) – 1 day earlier Please keep your username and password – the FYP coordinator cannot retrieve your password for you! For FYP2 students, use the same Turnitin account from your FYP1 (same username and password)
