RESEARCH METHODS IN HIGHER EDUCATION PROFESSOR EMILY GREY GOLDMAN, PH.D. Seminar: Research Ethics in Higher Education

Welcome! Goals for tonight’s seminar  Review questions related to the course  Discuss ethical considerations in higher education research Student check-ins  How is the course going so far?  How are your other courses going?

Questions and Concerns What are your current questions and/or concerns related to:  Course Reading (Creswell, APA Manual, articles)  Writing Assignments  Level of difficulty  Feedback  Relevance to your own professional work  Discussion Board  Grading Policies  Remaining assignments  General questions about higher education research

Where are we in the research process? Researcher’s world view Literature reviews Theoretical framework Development of research questions Selection of research design Ethical considerations Conducting research and data collection Data analysis and interpretation Implications for research Conclusions

Ethical Considerations Why should researchers be concerned with ethics when designing, planning, and conducting a study? What are some ethical considerations for qualitative research?  e.g., case studies and interviewing What are some ethical considerations for quantitative research?  e.g., surveys and experiments

Ethics and Academic Writing What is it about the APA guide that is so important to provide rules of writing and ethical standards for research? Maintaining confidentiality of subjects in writing Where are the “gray areas” when it comes to maintaining ethical standards in your writing?

Sharing of Ethical Dilemmas Can you think of any examples from your own experiences that involve an ethical dilemma, either when you were conducting research yourself or when you were the subject of a research study? Common ethical dilemmas in higher education:  Student confidentiality  Incentives for involvement in research  Use and misuse of data  Lack of preparation/knowledge for conducting research

Upcoming Assignments Unit 5: please be sure to select an article that includes: Methods, Findings, Results, etc [rather than literature review] Continue working towards course Final Project (best not to wait until final week, if possible) Review Gradebook to ensure all submissions and grades are up to date.

Any remaining thoughts or questions? Please feel free to me directly if you have remaining questions that you’d like to share privately Keep up the good work!
