Crisis Response Meridian Joint School District No. 2

“Crisis” is defined as: A sudden, generally unanticipated event that profoundly and negatively affects a significant segment of the school population and may involved serious injury or death.

A coordinated district-wide and building crisis response is no accident. It reflects prevention, intervention and rehearsed reaction.

Our Building Calling Tree Keep a copy of the building calling tree at home Follow the short/concise script. If you are unable to reach the person below you on the list leave a message and continue to the next person on the calling tree. Remember!!! Notify your school if your phone # changes.

What to expect at a morning staff meeting… Facts surrounding the crisis Description of the plan to inform students Instruction on what to do with students who are upset. Review of signs of stress/depression and the potential wide range of emotions Guidelines for staff who are impacted by crisis Guidelines for staff who are impacted by crisis Guidelines in dealing with the media

Be Prepared… Students will often return the day of, or soon after a crisis. Families view school as a “normalizing” activity for their student. Students view school as a safe and supporting environment.

When a student returns to school after a crisis…. DO: Let the student know you are glad to see him/her Let the student know you care Be reasonable about tests, projects, assignments Allow student to participate in regular school activities and assignments Let the counselor know the student has returned to school Have a plan for the student to see the counselor if he/she needs to talk.
