 Asia is the Earth’s largest and most populous continent  It covers about 1/3 of Earth’s land surface.

 Asia borders:  The Pacific Ocean to the east  The Indian Ocean to the south  The Artic Ocean to the north

 A region including Western Asia and Egypt is often called “the Middle East”  The term originated in Europe, where China was considered the “Far East”

 The Yangtze River flows through China and is the third longest river in the world.  It is the longest river in the world to flow entirely through one country.

 The mountain chains of Central Asia supply the continent’s great rivers with water.  People have migrated from the dry areas of Central Asia through the mountain passes into South Asia.  They have moved from the dry areas of southwestern Asia and from the Arabian Peninsula to Indonesia and the Malay Peninsula.  Mountain chains gave the Korean, Japanese, and Chinese people some protection.

Today  Most Asians live in river or mountain valleys.  Other Asians live near seacoasts where they farm or fish.  Agriculture is the most important economic activity in Asia.

Economies  China and India are both undergoing rapid growth and industrialization and are the two fastest growing major economies in the world  China is the world’s largest exporter of goods
